Soo Locks Saulte Ste Marie Michigan

  • Sault Ste. Marie is the oldest city in Michigan and one of the oldest cities in the United States
  •  two thousand years, the native inhabitants of the Sault Ste. Marie area had utilized the St. Marys River and its resources. It came to be such a staple in their existence that they gave it a name: Bahweting. Later, in 1668, Father Jacques Marquette established a permanent mission called Sault de Sainte Marie.
  • In 1797, the Northwest Fur Company created a canal and, “lock of sorts,” on the Canadian side of the St. Marys River
  • Construction for the State Lock (the first official Soo Lock) began in 1853 and was completed in 1855.
  • St. Marys River is the only water connection between Lake Superior and the other Great Lakes
  • With three larger, newer locks in operation, the Weitzel Lock with its relatively shallow draft saw little use after 1919. By 1936 channels in the St. Marys River had been deepened to 24 feet and shipping companies began calling for a new, deeper lock as vessels had the capability of operating with deeper and deeper drafts. The project received a boost when the U.S. was drawn into World War Two and maintaining a steady supply of iron ore to steel mills became a matter of national security. Construction of a new lock to replace the Weitzel was approved in March 1942 and construction was completed in less than two years
  •  The lock began operating in October 1968 and in less than four years would lock through the first 1000-foot long vessel on the Great Lakes.
  • 100% of iron ore passes through the locks annually
  •  Visiting ships travel up to 2,342 miles
  • 22 million gallons of water are required to traverse a boat
  • The largest boat that comes through is more than 1,000 feet long
  • It takes 9 hours to pass through
  •  The locks allow boats to traverse a 21-foot drop
