Lighthouse Maine Poem First Lighthouse 1791 Maine
This vintage postcard has an image of the first lighthouse in the US state of Maine, which was commissioned by none other than George Washington himself who also appointed the first lightkeeper. It has some interesting information on how people used to travel against winds between Boston and Maine using waterways in the good old days before modern means of transportation were invented.
The lighthouse depicted on this postcard is known as Portland Head Light as the lighthouse sits on a hand of land known as Portland which also gave its name to the city of Portland in Maine.
The image on this postcard beautifully combines words and imagery as you can see the lighthouse against a backdrop of Gulf of Maine and captures sea waves and rocks to create an aesthetically pleasant sight. Blue has been used as the dominant color as it’s the color of both the sky and the ocean.
It’s a must have for any history lover and will be a good addition to your vintage postcard collection.
